Cā;
I am applying for a teaching position at Santa Clara University.
Their department is essentially non-existent, but I have some good
ideas about how computer science should be taught and I love to teach.
So I'd like to try building a group there. If I can get in. Since I
don't have a PhD. I'm getting all kinds of shit. So I'm asking you
to write a strong letter of recommendation for me if you would,
please. ( lie like hell!!)
The appropriate dignitary is:
Dr. Shu-Park Chan, Chairman
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Santa Clara University
Santa Clara, Cal
features of J. Allen
1. Depth: Many years experience in field.
PDP-1 THOR time sharing system
Culler-Fried system implementation
LISP implementation
LISP editor
systems programming
theorem-provers-theoretical and implementation
2. Education: in mathematical logic, recursion theory, all kinds of
computer science courses.
3.teaching experience
three years TA at UC Santa Barbara Math dept.
two years UCLA. compiler writing, data structures, machine organization
semantics of programming languages.
UC Santa Cruz workshop- LISP and data structures.
San Jose State University-one semester Abstract algorithms and
data structures
San Jose State - seminar on math theory of comp and logic.
4. Book: tell them how great the book on LISP and foundations of computer science
will be.
5. current research interests in mathematical semantics, language design
interactive programming systems, and computer science education.
Also I have finally realized that I made a very serious mistake in
not getting my PhD. I want to teach but without my degree there
isn't much hope for a reasonable position, regardless of what else I
do. Books, papers, etc., don't make any difference to the
bureaucracy. I talked with the C.S. secretary last week and she was
under the impression that I had to start over from scratch. If that's
necessary, I'll do it. The root of the problem is that I flunked too
many exams. I can plead extenuating circumstances: there were some
very serious family problems going on while I was trying to prepare
for the qualifiers.
If there is anything either you or I could do to get things back in
order I would be most grateful.
John
